New Etsy Rules for Children's Products Take Effect on June 2 — Water Beads,Magnets & Small Balls Fully Banned

This policy update is launched by Etsy to prevent global safety accidents involving children’s products and align with stringent consumer safety regulations in Europe and America,such as the U.S.CPSIA and the EU GPSR.Its primary goal is to minimize risks including accidental ingestion, choking and drowning among children.

The regulation no longer applies only to products designed specifically for children,but extends to all items that children may come into contact with,covering handmade goods,toys,maternal and infant supplies,DIY craft kits and more.
After the policy takes effect,Etsy will adopt a dual review mechanism combining automated systems and manual spot checks.Non-compliant listings will be forcibly removed,and sellers may face store warnings or even account suspension.
The previous operation mindset of positioning children-related products merely as aesthetic consumer goods is no longer viable.Moving forward, platform reviews will focus solely on potential safety hazards,regardless of product appearance or originality.

Three categories of goods are targeted for removal under the new rules, which have long been high-risk items supervised by the U.S.CPSC,leaving no room for non-compliant sales.
All craft kits sold with water beads are prohibited,even if marked "Not a Toy","Craft Supply" or "For Adults Only".Listings containing water beads in images,usage scenarios or keywords will trigger reviews immediately.
Risk warning:Water beads expand greatly after absorbing water.If swallowed by children,they will inflate inside the body and cause intestinal blockage.Many sellers previously exploited labeling loopholes, which this new rule completely closes.
All types of magnetic toys are fully banned,regardless of magnet strength or "Not a Toy" labels.
Risk warning:Small magnetic items are easily swallowed by young kids. Attracted magnets inside the body may lead to severe injuries such as intestinal perforation and obstruction.Such products have been recalled repeatedly across countries for safety issues.
Toy balls with a diameter below 1.75 inches (approximately 4.45 cm)are completely banned with no exceptions.

Most Chinese sellers of children’s clothing focus on fabric,cut,patterns and styling.However,compliance for kids’ apparel in Europe and America entails far more than looks and comfort.The updated policy sets two mandatory requirements that reshape apparel operation standards:
1. Drawstrings are banned on all upper-body clothing for children aged 14 and under Hoodies,jackets,sweaters,raincoats,capes and other tops for this age group cannot have drawstrings,to avoid strangulation or entanglement injuries.The platform recommends alternatives including snaps,buttons,hook-and-loop fasteners and elastic bands.
2. Flame resistance & tight-fit standards for children’s sleepwear Sleepwear and loungewear for children aged 10 months up to size 14 must be tight-fitting and flame-resistant.Loose-fitting sleepwear without flame retardant properties is prohibited.
3.Besides the above,apparel flammability performance,safety labels,age grading and size specifications are all mandatory compliance check items. Vague descriptions like"skin-friendly fabric,safe for kids"will no longer be accepted.Product design must fully comply with target market safety regulations from the start.
The biggest revision of the new policy breaks the misconception that "non-children’s products are safe".
Etsy judges compliance not just by labels such as "For Kids".It comprehensively evaluates product design,functions,usage scenarios and target users to determine whether the items are likely to be accessed or used by children under 12 years old.
In short: Any product accessible to children under 12 must meet children’s product safety standards,otherwise it will be deemed non-compliant. For example, small parts and magnetic accessories in adult craft kits will be taken down if they lack clear warnings stating "Not suitable for children under 12" and proper risk isolation.
1.Inspect all active listings: Remove all explicitly banned products first. Screen and delete high-risk words such as baby, kids, toy, sensory in titles, keywords, images and descriptions, as well as suggestive phrases like "Suitable for children".
2.Standardize product labels and descriptions: Clearly mark non-children’s products with warnings including "Not suitable for children under 12" and "For adults only" to avoid misjudgment.
3.Keep complete compliance documents: Sellers dealing with children’s products shall prepare material test reports, safety certificates, user manuals and package photos in advance for random inspections. Complete compliance documents are essential for business operation in European and American markets amid tightened supervision.
4.Guard against misjudgment by automated reviews: The automated review system may make errors. Preserve original listing images, copy and product parameters to file appeals timely and reduce losses if your listings or store are wrongly penalized.
Etsy’s stricter compliance rules reflect the general trend of tightened supervision on children’s products across European and American cross-border markets. The platform does not ban children-related business.
