The European Chemicals Agency plans to add two substances to the SVHC list!

On 15 December 2025, the Member State Committee (MSC) of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) unanimously agreed to identify n-Hexane as a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC). This marks the first time a substance has been listed on the SVHC Candidate List based on neurotoxicity – an "equivalent level of concern" – rather than traditional hazards such as carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, or reproductive toxicity. Additionally, 4,4'-[2,2,2-trifluoro-1-(trifluoromethyl)ethylidene]diphenol (BPAF) and its salts were also identified as SVHCs without requiring committee discussion.

ECHA will add both substances to the Candidate List of SVHCs in February 2026. Suppliers are required to provide safety information to downstream users. Upon inclusion, the total number of substances on the REACH SVHC(https://www.huak-cer.com/certifications/reach-compliance-certificate/) Candidate List will officially reach 253.

The information for these two substances is as follows:

Substance Name

Reasons for the proposal

Common uses

n-Hexane

Repeated exposure can cause poisoning in specific organs (Section 57(f) - Human Health).

Used in coatings, cleaning agents, foaming agents, functional fluids, polymer processing, cosmetics, and personal care products.

4,4'-[2,2,2-trifluoro-1-(trifluoromethyl)ethylidene]diphenol (BPAF) and its salts

Reproductive toxicity (Section 57c)

It is used as a reactive process regulator in the production and processing of polymer materials and rubber. It is also used as a crosslinking agent for certain fluorinated elastomers, and as a monomer for polyimides, polyamides, polyesters, polycarbonate copolymers, and other specialty polymers. Other BPAF salts are primarily used as vulcanizing agents or crosslinking agents in the production of fluorinated elastomers.
