The European Union took a significant step toward standardization and sustainability by revising the Ecodesign Regulation (EU) 2019/1782 for external power supplies. Announced on October 13, 2025, the updated rules will come into full effect by the end of 2028, introducing mandatory requirements for universal charging solutions.

1.USB Type-C as Standard: Chargers for laptops, smartphones, wireless routers, and monitors must include at least one USB Type-C port.
2.Detachable Cables: Chargers must feature detachable cables to improve universality and reduce waste.
3.Expanded Product Scope: The regulation now covers external power supplies, chargers, wireless charging pads, and USB Type-C cables.
4.Stricter Energy Efficiency: Higher energy efficiency standards will apply to all covered products.
5.Universal Charger Logo: Devices under the new rules must display EU Common Charger logo, a distinct visual element that will help inform consumers and facilitate the matching between the charger and the powered devices.

The EU estimates that by 2035, the new regulation will:
Save 3% in annual energy consumption.
Reduce 9% of greenhouse gas emissions.
Consumer expenditure can decrease by around €100 million per year by 2035
These measures aim to tackle electronic waste and promote a circular economy by ensuring interoperability and durability of charging accessories.
Manufacturers of electronic devices must adapt their product designs and supply chains to comply with the new requirements. Key steps include:
Integrating USB Type-C ports into all covered devices.
Ensuring detachable cable designs.
Meeting updated energy efficiency benchmarks.
Incorporating the EU Universal Charger logo into product labeling.
The 2028 deadline provides a clear timeline for manufacturers to align with the new standards. For businesses in the electronics industry, early preparation and compliance will be crucial to maintaining market access in the EU. This move complements the EU Wireless Directive and will further promote the standardization of charging equipment, improving interoperability among products in the market. HUAK Testing will closely monitor and follow up on the release of the new regulations, providing interpretations and updates as they become available.
